Market contraction

Many area farmers markets close for the year in the week leading up to Halloween.

Arlington's farmers market took its curtain call yesterday, when 3 vendors offered 13 varieties of apples. Kimball Farm, above, sold 10 of them. Kimball will continue in Davis Square and some other locations through Thanksgiving.

Some markets in Cambridge and Somerville continue through Thanksgiving, but Arlington closed yesterday.

Lexington missed what would have been its final Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy.

It's just another way that the old day we call Halloween marks both the climax and the decline of the season.
